When you think about fire, words like destruction and devastation come to mind, but also, resilience. Fire can burn for hours on end, to destroy everything in its path, yet it also makes things stronger and more beautiful. Under the crackling embers of the fire, the crisp wood is destroyed and transformed into dark boards to build strength and resistance.

We highlight fresh, local and seasonal produce with a great emphasis on plants that are hydrating, nourishing, supportive and healing. By bringing consciousness and creativity to our food choices and slowing down as we enjoy preparing, we add more nourishment and enjoyment to the experience. My team and I were guided by a belief that each person walks a unique path to wholeness. I wanted to incorporate all of these elements to establish an innovative experience that blends timeless wellness philosophies with state-of-the-art practices — individualized experiences that bring awareness to mind, body and spirit. For guests suffering from stress and emotional fatigue, the Edge of the Woods massage is recommended. Complete with herbal compresses, elderflower and willow tea infusions are used to calm the mind.

After they return, visitors are free to pick from a wide selection of nutritional tea for the tea ceremony. Shou Sugi Ban House, which opened in May 2019, was today named the best destination spa in the U.S. That means it took just two years for Shou Sugi Ban House to become the most coveted wellness retreat in the country. And that's not all the property accomplished in the span of 28 months — the Japanese-inspired wellness retreat in Water Mill, New York just opened its second hotel. With the introduction of Shou Sugi Ban Inn and two over-the-top private residences, the original Shou Sugi property has now expanded to become a true Hamptons wellness enclave.

Designed by chef Mads Refslund, co-founder of the restaurant Noma in Copenhagen, this menu is constantly changing as guests help prepare each dish. Featuring edible flowers, homemade sauces, and beautiful plating, guests become more mindful of what they put into their bodies and learn how the right food can make a difference in their health. There’s no alcohol, but after a day focussing on mindfulness and physical strength-building, you won’t want that glass of gruner. By the time you finally crawl under the cloud-like duvet of the queen-sized, blond-wood bed, you’ll slip easily and deeply into a sleep that's healthier than many—possibly any—you’ve had in the city in years. The open-concept living area, anchored by a modern fireplace, invites residents and guests to gather and unwind. Thoughtfully placed pendant lighting, crafted from natural rattan, casts a warm glow, complementing the wooden beams and neutral tones that define the space.

Guests share names and then go straight into a welcome yoga session, gracefully led so those with more experience won’t feel slowed down by first-timers. It’s a concept that also applies well in the ever-growing spiritual self-care space, which is in part why Amy Cherry-Abitbol named her month-old wellness retreat Shou Sugi Ban House. Drive through the property’s entry gates off Route 27 to be greeted by a ginormous statue of a Buddha, which is left over from the site’s days as a sculpture park. From the hand-carved soaps to the deep soaking bathtubs, this place is zen, and Buddha seems an appropriate gate-greeter, though Cherry-Abitbol insists the Japanese slant at Shou Sugi is strictly emotional. “We are not literally trying to create anything you’d find in Japan, it’s simply an inspiration,” says Cherry-Abitbol, who worked in Tokyo as a corporate lawyer in the '90s. Guests operate on more or less the same schedule, though you are always welcome to tap out of, say, the 2 p.m.

As I mentioned, many of the healing plants we use are grown in our onsite house garden and are incorporated into several of our spa treatments and wellness baths as well as meals in our culinary program. Our medicinal herb garden includes powerful healing plants like chamomile, calendula, mugwort and more, as well as aromatic herbs such as mint, rosemary and lavender. Shou Sugi Ban House extends its principles of returning to simplicity with food as well. The resort features a plant-rich menu that incorporates locally grown produce and herbs from the vegetable garden.

Sessions can focus on flexibility, mobility, or recovery, and will all support lymphatic flow and longevity. An active meditation practice that expresses itself through various forms of free -flowing movement and stretching. A Japanese energy-balancing technique tapping into the body’s Qi, the universal life force. A practitioner lightly places hands on or above the body to facilitate the healing process.

The blow-torching technique helps with resistance against insects, rot, water, mold, and fire. Many of the spaces incorporate reclaimed wood from the previous structure, including repurposed floorboards and doorways. There are cedar stools and altars that were recovered from older trees that had to be taken down and have been treated with our namesake Japanese technique of charring wood to make it more resilient. We also have solar panels, geothermal wells and a structured water filtration system across the entire property. The idea from the inception was to create an environment and programming that would bring people back to a simple appreciation for their natural surroundings.

Montauk’s Hither Hills House by Martin Architects is a stunning example of modern, nature-inspired design. Blending seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, this contemporary residence features a thoughtful interplay of indoor and outdoor living spaces. Engineered and natural materials create a harmonious plateau, where a private lower level nestles into the hillside and an elevated infinity pool carves into the earth above. A curated material palette of shou sugi ban, dark metal, glass, exposed concrete, and fine stucco unifies the property’s distinctive elements, resulting in a synthesized architectural composition. Retreats last four, five or seven days, start at $4,650 and begin and end the same way, sitting in a circle, on the ground, in the Meditation Hall, which connects the main house and wellness barn.
